The Story Behind the Lele Doll
The Lele doll comes from Amealco, Querétaro, made by hand by Otomí indigenous artisan women. In the Otomí language, "Lele" means baby. These dolls started as simple handmade toys, stitched from cloth by mothers and grandmothers who passed the craft down through generations. In 2018, the Lele doll was declared Cultural Heritage of the state of Querétaro, and it's now recognised as a symbol of Mexican folk art around the world. Every doll is still made entirely by hand, using fabric, lace, and colourful ribbons, carrying on a tradition that supports Otomí artisan families today.
